How to Choose a Tennis Bag

Whether you are a seasoned player or new to the sport, we know how important it is to get the right gear and that includes how you carry it to the court! With so many brands and silhouettes, it can be incredibly daunting and intimidating to find the right tennis bag, but we are here to help!

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help decide which bag is best for you:

  • How much gear would you consistently take to the court?
  • Are you carrying two racquets or more like eight?
  • Are you planning to use this bag for league and tournament play or just to carry the essentials for a lesson with your pro?
  • Do you bring a change of clothes and shoes, or are you just toting a towel?
  • Does it need to fit into a locker or are you commuting by bike or public transport?

Now that you have a better idea of what you plan to pack, let's start choosing the best bag for you:

For those who want carry lots of gear: 12- to 15-packs

Let’s start with the largest options! Tournament players, league players and simply anyone looking to carry a bunch of gear and racquets to the court will want to look at the largest racquet bags we carry. These bags have been built for the ultimate player and are also some of the most popular bags carried on the pro tour, but even us mere mortals can benefit from their functionality. Most of these bags will state how many racquets they can hold in their name, anything from 12 all the way up to 15, and they will offer three compartments for racquets and often have at least one pocket with a thermo-lining to help protect your strings and racquets from extreme temperatures. While we don’t necessarily think you need to bring 15 racquets to the court, we appreciate the flexibility of the space to carry everything you need for a long day of tennis! These bags usually have a handful of accessory pockets as well as vented spots for shoes or dirty gear. Carrying options often include well-padded, adjustable straps that can be worn over your shoulder or as a backpack. Even if you don’t plan to fill this bag all the way up, we think it’s a winning solution for carrying your gear to the court!

Middle of the road: 6- to 9-racquet packs

From there, the next size down would be something between a 6 or 9 pack. These bags are very similar to their larger counterparts and often are identical in styling but have only two racquet compartments. Many players prefer these bags to the massive tournament bags because they can hold a significant number of racquets, have ample room for shoes and other gear but just are a bit easier to manage and carry to and from the courts. They also usually have a thermo-lined pocket to keep racquets and strings protected from extreme elements, which is important for players in extreme climates.

Smallest option: 3 pack

The next step down is a simple 3 pack. We love these bags for players who are newer to the sport and might only need to carry one or two racquets but still appreciate extra space for balls and court accessories. These bags are often simple in style and feature one main compartment and simply one or two accessory pockets. They usually have a single shoulder strap for easy carrying!

Non-traditional: Duffel

Many players opt out of carrying a traditional tennis bag. Whether it is for function or style, we’ve got you covered with some awesome options whether it is a backpack, tote or simple duffel bag.

Tennis bags come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit your needs, whether you need a big racquet bag to carry lots of gear or a versatile backpack for convenience.

Versatile: Backpacks

Backpacks are a versatile option that many players opt into as they can carry racquets along with anything else they might need for their day of activities (so much so we compiled a list of our favorite backpacks here). The tennis-specific backpacks almost always have a racquet specific padded section and come equipped with zippers that stop when pulled open making walking or biking with these bags a no-brainer. Our favorite tennis backpacks also have a main compartment for gear, lots of accessory pockets, mesh side pockets for balls and water bottles and of course, a shoe tunnel. With plenty of options, backpacks are also obviously functional off the court, which is why we love them even if we aren’t playing every day! Pro tip: If style and fashion are important, we have a wide variety of designer backpacks that not only look super cute but are functional and a fun way of adding a bit of personality to the court! Fashionable: Totes

Next up, let’s talk about totes! Often more fashion-forward, there is a whole world of tennis totes that have been designed with colors, prints and personality to match your game! These bags are specifically made with the tennis player in mind and have intentional pockets and compartments for your racquets, shoes, and court accessories. Whether it is bright and bold or a simple color, these totes vary in size, material and price and are sure to help you show up in style! If style is essential for you, be sure to check out our list of our favorite designer tennis bags here.

Fashionable tennis totes come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Simplicity first: Sackpack

We get it, you will let your racquets do the talking and you don’t want to make a big deal about what bag you carry and can throw your racquets in anything. That’s why we even have the very simple duffel bags that can hold your essentials just like when the pros are off to practice at a tournament. Usually with one large compartment and nothing too complicated going on, players love to toss in a pair of shoes, racquets, and some extra sunscreen while the racquet heads simply fit in the zippered compartment with handles sticking out. Or if something smaller is what you are looking for, the sackpack is another easy way to keep your balls and water bottle contained while carrying your racquets in your hands. It doesn’t have to be complicated, keep it simple.

Tennis luggage: Travel bags

Lastly, traveling tournament players will want to take a look at the large travel bags we have on our site. While you won’t want to drag one of these massive bags with you to the court, we do think they are a great way to travel whether it is to a camp, tournament or even vacation! Many have wheels on one end, and they are large enough to hold racquets within, making these extra-large bags simple to pack up and travel with!
