How Air Diffusers Work in Your HVAC

Installing an air diffuser on the HVAC supply vent in a specific room can make comfort control in that room more effective and efficient. In a typical residence, HVAC airflow volume into a single room averages around 400 cubic feet per minute.

However, in many cases, the basic “original equipment” vent grille on a supply vent isn’t very adjustable when it comes to accurate direction and distribution of all that air entering a room. Because air passing through a standard supply vent flows in limited directions with only minimal adjustability, certain areas in a room may stay too cool or too hot. Also, airflow passing through a standard vent grille is often conspicuously noisy as the system cycles on and off.

Advantages of Accurate Airflow

An HVAC air diffuser is a plastic or metal add-on that replaces the standard supply-air vent grille in a room. Some models simply snap over the existing grille for quick, easy installation. Advantages of installing an air diffuser in certain rooms include:

  • Adjustable louvers and grilles designed to accurately aim airflow into multiple areas, eliminating stubborn hot and cold spots that may exist in a room.
  • Alternatively, a diffuser can be adjusted to produce a wide, 360-degree airflow pattern for even distribution throughout the entire room.
  • A diffuser can direct airflow toward the ceiling. This helps push heated air that naturally accumulates at the ceiling back down into the living spaces of the room for more effective warming in winter.
  • The adjustable grille disperses velocity of air entering a room more effectively. This reduces the annoying whooshing noise of moving air passing through a standard fixed grille.
  • Installed on a vent, diffusers are generally inconspicuous and blend in with the room. Many are available in a variety of designs and colors that do not clash with your interior decor.
