FDA issues warning about injury risk from recalled heating pads

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an injury warning about recalled heating pads. More than 500,000 Mighty Bliss electric heating pads were recalled due to the risks of injury, including electric shocks, skin burns, rashes or irritation, according to a news release from the FDA. Whele LLC announced the recall this week for Mighty Bliss electric heating pads that were distributed between July 2021 and July 2022. They were sold online by Amazon and Walmart.To date, the FDA has received 286 customer complaints between July 2021 and September 2022 "related to the product overheating, sparking, burning, or presenting other electrical problems," the release says.Of those complaints, the FDA says 31 involved injuries such as electric shocks, burns, and rashes or skin irritation. To date, the FDA is not aware of any deaths associated with the use of this product. The FDA is aware of reports of injuries and potential hazards associated with the use of Mighty Bliss electric heating pads.Anyone who has a recalled heating pad should stop using it and visit the company's website for refund information. When using any kind of heating pad, the FDA recommends the following: Always follow the safety instructions included with your electric heating pad.Use the electric heating pad for only 15 to 20 mins at a time to avoid the risk of burns.Stop using the heating pad if you notice any frayed wires, holes or tears.Stop using the device if sparking occurs. Make sure there is no water nearby the heating pad when it is being used.Always start with the lowest setting and turn up the heat only if it is needed.Place towels between the heating pad and the skin to help reduce the risk of burns.Never sleep with the heating pad on.Do not use the heating pad nearby an oxygen tank.Do not use pins, nails, thumbtacks or other metal items to puncture the heating pad.If the heating pad has a fabric cover, keep it on the heating pad.Do not let children use the heating pad unsupervised.
