Replace front oil seals when replacing timing belt?

29 Jan.,2024

Bigdelvac1Al, the good news is it is right in our own backyard! Mark's VW on Route 12 in Plainfield gave me the quote and informed me of the seal replacement.
Sounds like an up to date guy. He has done the job on TDi's in the past. The only thing that concerns me is he makes extensive use of aftermarket parts, which isn't necessarily bad, depending upon his source. But if I spot a J.C. Whitney catalog in his shop, I'm running for the door! He said he was even giong to source the tensioner aftermarket-I'll have to get some clarification.

There is a place in Norwich, Budzeck's VW
(right down RT 12 from All-Foreign Parts)
who will do the job for slightly less than $300, but made no mention of the seal replacement, and said the tensioner would be from VW and any aftermarket parts they use must be made in Germany. Another possible choice. I called the dealer, Langan, and in their usual non-commital way said "about $400 more if we replace the tensioner and serpentine belt". Can you guess where I'm not going? I'll keep you posted-I've got 54,000 miles on the car so I have a little breathing room.
