China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment has released its official 2024 Report on the State of the Ecological Environment.

The report shows that coal accounted for 53.2% of the country’s total energy consumption in 2024, a decrease of 1.6 percentage points compared to 2023. In contrast, clean energy sources—including natural gas, hydropower, nuclear, wind, and solar—made up 28.6% of the energy mix, up 2.2 percentage points year-on-year.

As of the end of 2024, China’s national carbon emissions trading market had recorded a cumulative trading volume of 630 million tonnes, with total transaction value reaching RMB 43.03 billion.
