Brazing is a technique for joining two objects using a metal filler that melts and binds the objects together. It’s a similar process to soldering except that it’s done at higher temperatures to create a much stronger bond. Unlike welding, brazing doesn’t heat the pieces to be joined to their melting point, allowing different materials to be joined—in the case of cutting tools, diamonds to metal.

There are many different brazing techniques, several of them using fluxes similar to soldering. Vacuum brazing is done in a vacuum oven, offering two advantages for making cutting tools. First, the vacuum eliminates the need for a flux, making a cleaner bond with higher strength and integrity. Second, because the oven’s temperature is controlled, there is less heating and cooling stress on the material while allowing it to be heat-treated for better strength. This results in a blade that, while not quite as aggressive as an electroplated one, can withstand extreme operating conditions in which an electroplated blade would be too fragile.

Vacuum brazed diamond blades are particularly suited for softer stones like marble and limestone, and for aggressive, fast cutting of hard materials such as metal, ductile iron, PVC and other materials too hard for other blades.
