The 5 biggest advantages of using aluminium in die casting

23 Oct.,2023

Gold, frankincense, and myrrh may be the talk of the town in December, but when it comes to die casting, the only material you need to worry about is aluminium.

As one of the Earth’s most abundant elements, it’s used to great effect in die casting, offering a number of crucial advantages over other metals.

Here the die casting experts at Lupton and Place take a look closer look at what those benefits are.

5 key benefits of aluminium in diecasting

#1 Its weight

– or lack thereof!

Aluminium is hugely favoured for its lightweight quality. As one of the lightest metals available, it is no great surprise that aluminium die cast parts are highly sought after in the aviation and motor industries.

#2 Its flexibility

Need a metal that’s easy to work with? Aluminium is the answer.

As the second most malleable metal and the sixth most ductile, it’s hard to beat in terms of flexibility.

#3 Its conductivity

Aluminium is a great electrical and thermal conductor.

Although copper is even more conductive, it’s heavier, which can often be a disadvantage. Aluminium is only around a third of the weight of copper.

Add to this the fact that aluminium is non-sparking (meaning it won’t produce sparks that could ignite and cause a hazard), and it’s easy to see why it is the chosen metal for a variety of applications, including electrical products, computer parts, and LED lighting.

#4 Its resistance to corrosion

Thanks to a thin yet strong oxide film that forms on the surface of aluminium when it’s exposed to air or water, it is highly resistant to corrosion.

This coat of aluminium oxide hardens to the surface and keeps the metal below free from corrosion.

#5 Its recyclability

Aluminium is 100% recyclable – and not just once! Every time an aluminium part is created, it can be melted back down and re-used without losing any of its favourable qualities.

In a world increasingly conscious of environmental impact, and with businesses striving to use sustainable methods and strategies, it’s no wonder aluminium is at the top of the leader board.

That’s our top 5, but in reality, there are many more advantages to using aluminium in die casting – not least its versatility.

The combination of all these favourable qualities makes aluminium a great die casting metal that’s ideal for numerous and varied applications. Which is why aluminium die casting parts can be – and are – used for everything from medical equipment and gun parts to telecommunications and traffic lights (we told you the uses were varied!).

Find out more about using aluminium in die casting

Keen to learn more about the potential gains of aluminium die casting? Then why not talk to the team here at Lupton and Place?

As European leaders in this highly sought-after die casting process, there’s nothing we don’t know about the benefits of using this metal. That said, we also recognise that whilst aluminium die casting might be hard to beat, not every application is the same – different needs and priorities may mean that an alternative die cast metal is more suitable.

The most important thing is to make an informed decision.
