Chopped Strand Mat

Chopped strand mat (also called CSM) is the most commonly used composite reinforcement.

Chopped strands of fibersglass are randomly distributed and bonded together to form chopped strand mat. Chopped strand mat can be impregnated with resin and is a common reinforcement for traditional FRP products or moulds.

Due to its lower performance appearance than other reinforcements (glass cloth, carbon fiber, aramid fiber, etc.), chopped strand mat is generally not used as a skin layer in advanced composite materials, but it is still often used in products and is widely used in the manufacture of FRP products forming mold.

Why use powder form?

Something must be needed to bond the scattered chopped fibersglass together. Traditional emulsions for bonding chopped strand mat are soluble by polyester or vinyl resins; however, epoxy resins do not dissolve the emulsion, which means that the chopped strand fibers remain bound to each other, making chopped strand mat less prone to lamination .

Powder-type chopped strand mat can be used for epoxy resin, and its powder adhesive does not need to be dissolved like emulsion adhesive, so it is a basic requirement for epoxy laminated molds or products.

When the temperature drops in winter, the same resin will thicken, resulting in poor wettability of the resin, but the powder-type chopped strand mat is relatively fluffy, which completely resolves this problem, especially at the corners where it is easier to attach to the mold.
