How Automatic Can Sealing Machines Work

Automatic Can Sealing Machine Designs

There are two basic auto can sealing machine designs - rotary and non-rotary.

Rotary Machine Design

In a rotary auto can sealing equipment, the machine spins the container while it performs the sealing process. They are used mainly in big productions in the food industry. Non-Rotary Machine Design

Contrastingly, a non-rotary auto can seaming equipment keeps the container stationary in the sealing process which avoids container damages and spilling of liquid products inside. These are ideal in beverage industries. LPE’s Servo Fixed Speed Sealing Machine has a non-rotary machine design.

The Can Seaming Process

Can bodies have flanges with a curl at its end which when processed in the can seamer machine, the curl is interlocked with a lid’s flange curls to create a double seam.

The can seaming process starts by feeding the containers to the can seamer via the conveyor and are indexed automatically to the sealing area. For our Fully Auto Nitrogen Filling Vacuum Sealing Machine, the containers go straight to the sealing area. Whereas in our Servo Fixed Speed Sealing Machine and High Volume Fully Auto Round Can Sealing Machine, the containers are delivered below the seamer chuck via a turntable.

Then the can is lifted up for lid attachment where a three-stage sealing process happens as discussed in the following sections.

Stage 1. Compression

In this stage, a force is exerted to hold the can against the seaming chuck and places the lid into it then feeds the lid-container combination to the first roller for the double seaming process. For the vacuum sealing machine, the oxygen inside the container is first vacuumed and nitrogen is flushed into it before the lid is placed.

Stage 2. First Roller Operation

This stage is the most critical one for ensuring the integrity of the double seam to avoid wrinkles and leaks. The first roller comes in and folds the lid’s curl into the can’s flange forming a hook which is monitored to guarantee the seam’s integrity in various conditions. The fold should not be too loose or too tight because you can’t correct this later. After this stage, the seal is not yet hermetic and needs a second roller operation.

Stage 3. Second Roller Operation

Since the initial seam is still a loose one, the second roller operation stage irons it out to make sure that the sealing is tight by compressing the interlocked hooks of the lid-container combination. Then the machine squeezes a sealing substance into the open spaces between the seam to complete the hermetic seal. This sealing substance makes sure that no leaks and contamination will happen by reinforcing the seam.

The shape of the seam depends on the shape of the first and second rollers and the following:
