Our “entryway”, I put that in quotes because it’s really just a part of our living room, was looking a little bare & the empty space honestly bugging me to no end. I came up with this idea to make a DIY rustic entryway coat rack, & all I needed was to come up with a plan. At first I was going to build the whole thing from scratch, but then I stumbled upon this barn door & I completely changed my plans. This one was going to be larger, & more intense, but that’s how we do it around here so it made sense. Or did it. Anyways, our entryway is looking so much better with this new addition & it’s actually very useful too. Bonus!
Yup, that used to be a barn door. & now it’s hanging in our entryway like a boss holding all our coats up. Well, not all our coats, most are shoved into our hall closet, but this is where we hang coats, scarves, & purses we use daily. Well, Mr. LMB doesn’t carry a purse, but you get the idea.
Like all of my best ideas, this one came to life at night so please excuse my nighttime cell phone photos. You get the point. Ok, so we started with this barn antique barn door that we found. The side pictured is the backside of our coat hanger, because we all know it was too colorful for me, but beautiful none the less. We purchased some wood brackets from Home Depot & attached them to the top of the barn door where we wanted our shelf to be. The wood brackets just screwed right onto the door. On top of the brackets we screwed on some wood boards to make our shelf. After all of the wood was attached we stained the wood parts with dark walnut. The funny thing about the metal coat hooks is that they came off a clearance coat rack I found at Marshalls. I found the coat rack on a whim one day & bought it just for the hardware. A great way to get 5 great hooks for only $8! To hang the coat rack we used metal bar hanging system because we thought it would work the best for how crazy big & heavy this piece is {pictures do not do it justice… it’s huge!} Also this system made it easy to hang with two people, & it allowed us to put stuff on top & add more weight without it budging.
& because I love playing around with things I actually had it looking like something like this before the above photos for a more simple & clean look…
I’m in love this project & how it turned out. I mean a barn door rustic coat hanger? Who knew?! Some things that are bugging me about this space? First: The front door is the only door in the entire house that we didn’t change out when we gutted the house & it needs to go along with that brass door handle. Another thing? I need to spray paint the legs on that chair.. I know, I’ve been saying that for like 8 months now. One of these days it will happen. After looking at these photos, I think that day might be tomorrow. I will probably keep playing around with the styling on our new coat hanger & if I come up with something new, I will blog it & update you. What do you think of our DIY rustic coat hanger?
